Blog - Some Thoughts About Websites

A few times a month, I advertise on WIKB’s telephone time by getting on air and talking about websites.  Below are some of the things I’ve talked about. “Business owners need to realize that their design is a reflection of their business even if it is not intentional. If you don’t care about your design then your design is telling people that you don’t care about your business.”   — MARCO SUAREZ I don’t think Marco was talking about website design, but the quote is perfect for it.  If you have a website and haven’t updated it in years, you are telling your customers that you haven’t updated your business in years.  If you have a professional, up-to-date website, it will tell customers that you have a professional, well informed business!  Make sure your website is a reflection of your business!  Contact us and let us help you with your website and mobile site! August 29, 2016: You have to keep up with new internet technology. Internet technology changes every day.  I try to keep as updated as possible on new software, website trends, and any other internet technology.  This technology changes so much that it is even hard for me to stay updated.  If computer and internet are not your areas of business, you may not be able to keep up AT ALL.  That is where North Country Website Design comes in.  We can keep your website updated with the newest technology and search engine optimization.  We only do this if you want us to and don’t require you to pay for anything you don’t want.   But this is a great option if you want to stay up on all new internet technology and if you want your website to stay at the top of  search engine searches for your type of business.  If you have a website and your traffic has been decreasing, it is time to update your site with the new search engine optimization techniques.  Last year, I had a website client that was quite happy with his search engine hits to his website.  I explained that he will need to have a mobile friendly site and use new search engine techniques.  He was happy with the business he was getting so he didn’t want to change anything.  That makes sense, right?  Well… guess what?  Just 8 months later that same client came to me asking why he was so low on the search engine lists now.  He had a high end product that was getting 2-3 sales per day last year and now was only getting 2-3 sales per week.  This was just because his website didn’t stay up with search engine technology and techniques.  I don’t want this to happen to your company.  Have your website technology updated BEFORE you lose business. If you think you are losing out on customers because you don’t have a mobile site, social media linked to your website, or because you need to update your search engine techniques, call us today. August 16, 2016: Should social media take over for a company’s website? The answer is no. Your company’s website is an important part of your marketing presence and whether you feel that it is important or not, your customers do. Don’t risk skipping a website and jumping right into social media, the payoff is not worth the time saved. Social media should work in conjunction with your website, not in place of it. This isn’t to say that you should drop social media and just focus on your website. Websites aren’t the only business solution you need; they are just as necessary as social media is. You shouldn’t try to run with one over the other, we need them both to achieve the business success we are looking for. Using social media WITH your website, is the best way to build a strong following, engage with your customers and ensure the continued growth of your business. Call North Country Website Design today to get your website and social media presence started. July 5 2016: 85% of people search the internet to find a local business. 89% of consumers use the internet to find information on products.  Your website is the first impression of your business. Only a well-designed and functional website can convey your business to potential customers. If your website looks outdated, it won’t be a challenge for your competitors to take your customers. For example, my parents go camping a lot.  They like to go to places they have never gone before.  They look online for the best camp sites.  So, first of all, any campsites that don’t have websites at all, are completely missing out on their businesses.  When they are trying to decide on a campground, they look to see which campground looks that best!  So, the ones with a professional website with really nice, clear pictures is the one they almost always choose!  This same scenario works for just about any type of business.  If you don’t have a website, you are missing out on everyone.  If you don’t have a professional website with fantastic pictures, you are letting the competition steal your customers. June 30, 2016: How do choose a good domain name. What is the purpose of your website? Brainstorm the top 10 keywords and the main purpose of your website to get a better understanding of what kind of domain name you might want. You really need to have a domain name that is relevant to your brand and or company. Now, if you already have a business name, obviously you would want to use that, unless someone else already has that domain name. You may want to avoid choosing a domain name that could potentially confuse your brand with someone else’s. You should try to incorporate your top keywords into your domain name, if possible. Don’t force keywords just for the sake of it, but at least keep them in mind, especially if you don’t have an official company name to go by. For example, if you’re a professional designer, you could make your own brand by picking a unique domain name with your keywords in it (or your first and last name, or nickname). Be creative, be innovative. Is the domain name already taken? I usually go to register.com and type in the name I want to see if it is taken.  If it is, I go to the domain extensions and find a cool extension that fits the business.  Like .store, .place, . dance, etc.  Otherwise, you can always use domain extensions like .online, .biz, .website, .site, etc.  So, if you wanted fishtacos.com and it was taken, you could maybe use tacos.fish instead! Is your desired domain name unique enough? You want to get a domain name that won’t get others confused of your brand or identity. You wouldn’t want someone to go to your website and mistaken you for a different company (especially if they were looking for something totally unrelated). You want to choose a unique and memorable domain name, that you wouldn’t mind keeping for years to come. How easy is it to remember? If you were to tell someone to go to a hard-to-remember domain name, then chances are they will not remember it, even if they wrote it down somewhere beforehand.  This is VERY IMPORTANT.  You want a domain to be easy for people to remember so they can go back to your site regularly! Here are the top ten tips for choosing a domain name: 1. Choose a shorter name, if at all possible 2. Make sure your domain name is memorable and easy for others to remember 3. Avoid using hyphens and numbers 4. Purchase a .com (if you can) because that’s what people are used to typing in 5. Avoid domain names that people may misssssspell – like thecollectiblecalendar.com 6. Try to have keywords in your domain name, but don’t go overboard 7. Avoid awkward domain names 8. Avoid existing company names, for example nissan.com  9. Avoid text phrases such as bestartwork4u.com vs. bestartworkforyou.com vs. bestartworkforu.com 10. If you have a good domain name in mind, buy it ASAP!  Don’t let someone else get it first! Resolution is in basic terms, the size of an image. It’s the density of dots that make up the image when printing. The bigger resolution, the more detailed it is, the lower the resolution, the less detailed and fuzzy it becomes. DPI (dots per inch) and PPI (pixels per inch) are often used and are much of the same thing.  I often use large pictures the full width of the screen for some pictures.  Those pictures need to be high quality (many pixels per inch) to look good on a website.  Having really nice, high quality pictures can really make a big difference on how a website looks.  We have a few different ways you can get high quality pictures for your website.  If you have a good digital camera and you are good at taking pictures, you can take the pictures yourself.  If you don’t have a digital camera, I can take the pictures for you.  If you want professional pictures taken, you can can have a professional website photographer take the pictures for you.  We have 3 different photographers that we work with, you can use any one of them or any other photographer that you choose.  The choice is yours on how you want to get good quality pictures, but make sure you have great pictures on your website to really make it stand out above your competition’s websites! Here are a couple good articles about pictures: Image Resolution for Website Design and Graphic Design The ultimate guide to image resolution May 17, 2016: There are a few restaurants in my town.  Some have websites and some don't.  Any idea where I go to get my quick meals to go?  That's right, the restaurants with the website and mobile site that has a menu on-line available to see anytime.  I can help any business set up a website to help get more daily customers to their business.  I can also help you set up a way for you to put specials on your website daily and set up an email list to contact your customers daily or weekly or however often you need!  I can also help you set up Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.  I can help you create a logo, brochure, and business cards!  You want your companies brand to match throughout all media and I can help you with that! May 10, 2015:

Alright, Let me put it plain and simple.  If you don't have a website, you are losing customers. Let me say it again.   If you don't have a website, you are losing customers.  I just read a survey that said 85% of consumers use the internet to find local businesses.  Did you hear that?  85%!  Nearly everyone is finding businesses on-line.  If you don't have a website, you are missing out on 85% of new customers!  Wow! So, now say that you already have a website and you have had it for a while.  You don't have a mobile site but you do have a website.  You aren't missing out on that 85% right?  Wrong.  You are missing out on about 60-70% of those consumers!   I bet you didn't know this statistic!  So many people are looking on-line for businesses on their tablet or phone, that you MUST have a mobile site or you are missing out on a HUGE number of potential customers. So, what should you do to get a website and mobile site?  You call North Country Website design and we set you up with a top quality, low cost website and mobile site.  Many informational sites cost between $350-$500!  I bet you didn't know you could get a site for such a low cost! And that is only a one time fee.  After your site is set up, there is only a very small monthly webhosting fee of $10.00!  There is no other advertising that you can get for only $10 a month! And it is not only businesses that would benefit from a website and mobile site.  Organizations, non-profits, political candidates, and radio stations.  I can even help create PERSONAL websites for anything you might want. May 2, 2016: Creating your own website vs. having North Country Website Design create your website for you When I am searching the internet I often find that many websites look the same or very similar.  This is because many people are creating their own websites using template based websites like Wix or WordPress.  When NCWD creates a website for a business, that website is ONE OF A KIND!  Our websites are as unique as the business they belong to.  There are some similarities to all of the websites that I create because some things people expect to see when browsing a website.  They expect to see the navigation at the top of the page either at the very top or on the side.  They expect to see navigational buttons or tabs so that they know how to move around the website.  I make every website unique but still easy for internet user to find their way around the website or mobile site. Also, for people that create their own website, they think that once the pictures and information is on the website, they will be found on the internet.  There is much more work that needs to be put into a website for it to be found by people searching on search engines.  When NCWD creates a website and mobile site, all search engine optimization is done when the site is nearly complete.  We put a lot of effort into making sure that your site will be found by potential clients.  What good is having a website if your customers can’t find it? Another big problem I see when people try to create their own websites is pictures that don’t fit right into the website.  It takes a lot of time and effort to find the correct photos for a website, make them the right size, and enhance the photo to make it look perfect for the website.  Sometimes I will manipulate a photo 50 times before I get it just right for a website! Finally, the last problem with creating your own website is that most times, the software, web-hosting and other fees you need to pay to create your own website ends up being the same as what it would cost to hire NCWD to do it for you - and we would do it right with the newest technologies from the beginning.   Give me a call today to set up a free consultation to talk about your business and how NCWD can help you with a new or updated website, mobile site, internet advertising, social media pages and so much more. I just found a site that explains how much a custom website is going to cost you.  Here is the link.  For a informational website with a custom responsive design with slide-show and integrated social media (which is standard for all my websites), I charge $350-$500.  This page says that you can get this same site for $2550-$5100 (if you want to add an online store, that is another $1000).  This is what most people are paying for a custom website.  I am creating these same websites for small businesses and organizations for 1/6 of the cost!  That is why customers from all over the Midwest are starting to find out about my business and my business is exploding!  If you would like to have a website created for you for 1/6 the cost of going to other website companies, give me call. One last thing, I’ve been getting a lot of new customers lately because other website companies are creating websites for these business and then not providing maintenance and support for the website once the design is complete.  I provide maintenance for your website for as long as you need it.  So, if you want to move your website to NCWD, call me today to make an appointment to talk about what NCWD can do for you! April 28, 2016: Responsive web design – A design that provides an optimal viewing and interaction experience on a website.  Responsive web design makes it easy to read and navigate with a minimum of resizing and panning across a wide range of devices.  This allows a user to see a wide screen on a desktop computer or a small screen with large letters on a mobile phone. If you go to NorthCountryWebsiteDesign.com homepage on a desktop computer or laptop, you can see our responsive site.  If you make your browser wide, you can see the wide layout of our website.  If you start to make the browser window narrower, you will see the design change to a medium size design.  If you continue to make the window smaller, you will see a very narrow design which is perfect for a cell phone.  This change in design is Responsive web design.  NCWD will automatically create the wide design and the small mobile design for you.  If you wish to create medium designs, we can do that as well! April 26, 2016: We now offer typing as one of our services We have been asked a lot lately for typing services.  So, we have decided to add it to the services offered by North Country Website Design.  We now offer typing services for the low cost of $24 per hour!  We will type anything for you and make it look nice! We also offer logo creation, brochure designs, business card designs, poster designs and much more.  We work with Sentinel Technologies in Crystal Falls to print these designs when we are done, or you can print them yourself!  Any of this work can be done for the low cost of $48 per hour. We offer online marketing, social media marketing, search engine optimization and so much more.  Check out our website for our services or give me a call at (906) 367-5404 for more information April 13, 2016: Outdated Websites Does your business currently have a website?  When is the last time it has been updated?  Most businesses need to update their website design every 2-3 years.  Website technology changes so often that not long after two years, your website looks outdated.  Also, if you created your website over two years ago, you probably don’t have a mobile site.  Every website MUST have an integrated mobile site or you are losing out on customers. Over 60% of all on-line traffic comes from a mobile device like a smart phone or tablet.   If your website is not mobile friendly, Google might not display your website at all when a search is done on a mobile device.  To find out if your website is mobile friendly, go to my homepage at www.northcountrywebsitedesign.com. In addition, if your website is over 2 years old, your design, content and pictures are probably looking outdated.  You don’t want your customers to think that your business is outdated too.  Your website or mobile site is the first impression you have on a potential customer. I can set up top quality, low cost websites and mobile sites for any business, local government like townships, political candidates, and even personal websites.  You can get a new website for as low as $350.  After your site is set up, there is only a very small monthly webhosting fee of $10.00!  There is no other form of advertising that you can get for only $10 a month! So call NCWD today at (906) 367-5404 or go to our website at www.northcountrywebsitedesign.com.   Or you can stop by our office.  Our office is located in Crystal Falls, on Highway US2 next to the Jacobs-Plowe funeral home. April 9, 2016: I can create websites for people anywhere in the USA or any English speaking country.  I have created websites for people all over the USA, including Minnesota, New York, lower peninsula of Michigan, and many cities in Wisconsin.  Of course, most of my business is local in the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin, including Iron Mountain and Kingsford, Michigan, and Florence, Wisconsin.  The majority comes from businesses in Crystal Falls and Iron River, Michigan.  So, if you have a business ANYWHERE and need an inexpensive, high quality website for your small or medium size business, North Country Website Design is the perfect choice. December 28, 2015: Many businesses are probably working on their end of the year inventory shortly.  This is a great time to open an online store! When you do inventory, look at: What are your best sellers? What would ship easily to customers? What is overstocked? These items would be perfect to put into an online store.  You can double or even triple your sales this year by selling the same products you normally sell online.  Could your business use some extra sales this year? If you are a car dealership, you can also use an online store to display your current stock of vehicles for sale.  If you have a any type of business where you sell items, an online store can improve your business. NCWD will set up your online store and set up a few items in your inventory for you.  Then I will show you how to add more items from your store.  This allows you to update your store as much as you wish for no extra cost.  You will have a nice, professionally created online store and is managed by you and your staff. If at any time you need help, NCWD is alway here to help you! The store is automatically set up for you to be mobile friendly as well.  Another really great feature of our online store is that once you have an item set up in your online store, it can be easily put on Ebay and Amazon with a push of a couple buttons! If you want to see an example of an online store that is working with hundreds of items added to the store, check out store.timelesstrinkets.com.  This is my online store where I sell vintage toys from the 1970s, 80s and 90s. So, if you have any questions about an online store or any website questions, give me a call at (906) 367-5404 or go to our website at www.northcountrywebsitedesign.com.

If you were to tell someone to go to a hard-to- remember domain name, then chances are they will not remember it, even if they wrote it down somewhere beforehand. That's right, the restaurants with the website and mobile site that has a menu on- line available to see anytime.

So many people are looking on- line for businesses on their tablet or phone, that you MUST have a mobile site or you are missing out on a HUGE number of potential customers. Organizations, non- profits, political candidates, and radio stations. For a informational website with a custom responsive design with slide-show and integrated social media (which is standard for all my websites), I charge $350- $500. Our office is located in Crystal Falls, on Highway US2 next to the Jacobs- Plowe funeral home. So, if you have any questions about an online store or any website questions, give me a call at (906) 367- 5404 or go to our website at www.northcountrywebsitedesign.com.
