Over the next few weeks, we want to focus on some marketing basics and explore why they are so foundational to your business success. You may not stop to think about it, but all the marketing you do must build on itself, and having a secure foundation is critical to support all future marketing success.

The Mission.

Whether it is day one of opening your doors or your business is many decades in the making, it is never too late to focus on and define (or redefine) your mission. Your company’s mission is probably already there (in your mind) even if it isn’t clearly defined for others. By defining this, you will not only help new customers to see WHY you exist quicker, but also help guide your employees towards this apparent team goal. Think of your Mission as your company’s Compass.  If you were hiking in unknown territory, how lost would you feel without a compass to guide you? VERY. It is easy to see how critical this little tool is. The same is true for the navigation of your company.

If your compass/mission always points towards the goal, it helps guide all internal and external navigation alike.

What is my Mission?

Well, why does your business exist?

Before we can SHOW your company mission in action, we need to define precisely what it is. Let me challenge you to make this as detailed as possible. Let’s use ourselves as an example here as we explore his concept. We could say that North Country Website Design has the mission to “build a great online presence.” But this doesn’t speak to our highly valued relationship with our customer. It fails to capture the partnership we strive to create and develop with our customers and our goal to be an extension of their business.

A more effective mission is this:

“To help lead and guide our clients to build a powerful online presence that reflects their brand and brings in results.”

This mission now defines our job, our relationship with our customers, and how success is defined. A good mission will provide all of this.

Ask yourself these questions, then develop a mission that includes these answers:

  • Why do you exist?
  • How do you make your customer’s world better?
  • What does success look like?

Now look at your mission. Could it be more specific? Could it be more detailed to provide better “navigation” for your company? Perhaps it’s time to refocus and update it! Remember, the clearer your compass is defined, the easier it will be to see exactly where it points. Being able to see exactly where it points makes it easier to stay on track while on your business journey.
