Building on last week’s newsletter, Knowing Your Mission, it is important to remember that today’s customers expect more than well-crafted words on a website. They want to see companies actively living their mission — brands that truly “walk the walk.”

According to one survey, 87% of people want a meaningful relationship with brands, but only 17% think that brands are delivering that. Being able to SHOW that you follow and act in line with your company’s mission is critical for your customers to connect and build a relationship with you.

But how can I show my company’s mission?

  1. Communicate your mission within your company.
    • Post it everywhere for your employees and customers to see daily.
  2. Ground it within your culture.
    • Encourage actions that support the mission and recognize and reward employees who do so.
    • Use the mission to make daily decisions and encourage employees to do the same.
  3. Demonstrate it from the top down.
    • Leaders should support and communicate the critical role the company’s mission plays. They should be held responsible for upholding this mission within their teams.
  4. Check and continue to develop products & services in line with your mission.
    • Periodically check that what you are delivering is in line with your mission.
    • Also use the mission to focus and help guide the launch of new products or services.
  5. Encourage employee participation.
    • Create and allow opportunities where your employees can participate in activities that are mission-focused and supported.
  6. Measure the impact.
    • Decide how you will evaluate performance and mission-focused efforts.
    • Regularly review information on these performance marks to look for trends, successes, and areas for improvement.
  7. Share your success.
    • Telling and sharing your success stories is proof that your mission is at work. Show and tell (in your location and online) the positive impact your mission is making in your company and in the community beyond.
